HBO's It Spinoff Releases Second Early on HBO Max

Fans are eagerly awaiting for the chilling show the Derry series, already garnering praise and incorporating references from the broader King universe. Just one day after launch, HBO declared that episode two will arrive early, scheduled ideally for the spookiest night.

Early Release Particulars

Beginning on Halloween night at midnight PT, episode two of the Derry prequel will make its debut on HBO Max, before its Sunday HBO premiere. Future chapters of the eight-episode season will continue to air on Sunday nights on the network and streaming service, building toward the season finale on the 14th of December.

Show Background

Taking place within the world of King's It, Welcome to Derry is inspired by the original story while expanding on the setting realized by director Andy Muschietti in It and It Chapter Two. It Chapter One centered on young characters battling terrifying threats, so it’s fitting that the series continues that tradition. Yet, the first installment of the streaming show demonstrates it intended to raise the stakes, providing even more intense scares than the movies and establishing a brutal tone for the upcoming episodes.

Setting and Themes

Set in 1962, this show features a different group of adults and children living in a seemingly idyllic town concealing a evil heart. Derry follows a vicious, repeating pattern—defined by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a monstrous presence returns once every three decades. Although Welcome to Derry might appear like it leans too heavily to the movies initially, what differentiates the HBO Max series is its dual perspective—narrated via the perspectives of kids and grown-ups concurrently. Younger characters are highly exposed to It's terror, but the adults also face confronting their individual fears born from local discrimination and covert otherworldly powers.

The series airs on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
