Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Return

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
