This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government. A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties. "Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed. The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved. Broader Government Consultations Underway In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests. After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
