Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
